Outrun Colorectal Cancer!

Join the MSCRS Colorectal Cancer Awareness Fun Run 2024
RAISE AWARENESS WITH A FUN RUN, HEALTH FAIR, AND ACTIVITIES
ON JULY 7, 2024, AT ECO ARDENCE, SHAH ALAM
Kuala Lumpur, 11 July 2024 – Colorectal cancer is now the most common cancer among
Malaysian males and the second most common among females. There is also an increasing
number of cases among younger adults (under 40 years old). More alarmingly, up to 70% of
patients seek medical attention only at a later stage, as many are unaware of the symptoms of
colorectal cancer.
To raise awareness about colorectal cancer, the Malaysian Society of Colorectal Surgeons
(MSCRS) is organising its inaugural Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign featuring a fun run
with two distances (4KM and 7KM). The Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign also aims to
increase public awareness of colorectal cancer and highlight the importance of screening for early
detection.
“Seeking treatment at a late stage leaves patients with less than a 10% chance of survival. This
puts a strain on the Malaysian healthcare system,” said Dr. Nurhashim Haron, Organizing
Chairman of the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign 2024.
Dr. Nurhashim added that the common symptoms of colorectal cancer include blood in stools, a
change in bowel habits, abdominal pain, and unexplained weight loss. However, these symptoms
typically indicate more advanced disease. Early colorectal cancers are usually asymptomatic,
highlighting the importance of screening.
“Screening can be done with stool or blood tests at your nearest general practitioner, Klinik
Kesihatan, or hospitals. The earlier you detect it, the better the chances of a cure,” Dr. Nurhashim
advised.

Emphasising the importance of early detection and prevention, Dr. Nurhashim reinforced that the
public should be educated on the early symptoms and signs of colorectal cancer so they can seek
medical advice during the early stages.
“We aim to educate the public on how to prevent colorectal cancer or catch it early when it’s most
treatable.”
The Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign 2024 will take place on 7 July 2024 at Eco Ardence
Malaysia and will be officiated by the Health Minister, YB Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad.
The event will start with a Colorectal Cancer Awareness Run at 7:00 AM, offering a choice of two
distances, 4 KM and 7 KM. To empower participants and members of the public, a public forum
on colorectal cancer is organized. Other exciting activities include Zumba sessions, a health fair,
and a lucky draw to win fantastic prizes.
“We are calling for participation from all walks of life. Come with your family and friends to learn
more about colorectal cancer and how to prevent it,” Dr. Nurhashim concluded.
